Princess Marina Nicolaievna Gagarin (1877-1924), holding her daughter Marina in her arms.
Plaster, unsigned. Wear of time and small accidents.
H.: 50 cm - L.: 20 cm.
Reference: this preparatory study in plaster should be compared to the version
made in bronze dated 1898 located in the Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, entitled “The Mother and the Child”; another bronze version
was made in 1902.
History: the theme of motherhood is recurrent in Troubetzkoy. This
plaster is part of an important group of works produced during the first
years of work by the artist. It depicts Princess Marina Gagarin,
cousin of Troubetzkoy, who posed for him on numerous occasions during
her career as an artist, and at least three bronzes depicting her are known.
