ROMAN GOLD DISC, with repoussé border and central eye surrounded by animals and other symbols including an elephant, dog, mouse and thunderbolt within a die-formed beaded border, pierced with remains of two twisted wire pendants, traces of clasp attachment at the back; and another, with similar motifs, an attachment loop at the back, both circa 1st-2nd Century A.D. Ø22 & 16 mm respectively. The symbol include, but do not seem to be limited to, astronomical symbols. The central eye is common to most such pieces. For similar discs and references to the type, f. Marshall, nos. 2887 and 2888; another example from Dali, Cyprus, is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts, New-York.
