Egypte, Première Période Intermédiaire, env. 2200-2000 av. J.-C.
Gneiss anorthosite; env. 22 x 37 x 26 cm
An Egyptian anorthosite gneiss base of statue of a pharaoh walking on his ennemies. c. 2200-2000 B.C. The basic fragment preserved
shows the left foot of a pharaoh crushing nine incised and highly stylized bows: this gesture symbolizes Egyptian domination
over conquered peoples and barbarians. In front of the foot, presence of three registers of foreign writings (possibly Carian)
and partially erased. It is possible that the statue served as a re-employment in a later period. The symbolism of pharaoh slaying
his enemies being an iconography used over several dynasties until the end of the New Kingdom. Two similar examples kept at
the Louvre Museum show the same element of a statue in the name of Khéperkare Sésostris (fig.1) and a statue base depicting a
king in the attitude of walking, standing on 9 arches (fig.2) . Fragment of rectangular shape, smooth and polished surface pitted
in places.
