Calcaire. 44,5 x 9,5 cm
Egypte, Gizeh (?), Ancien-Empire, v. 2600- 2200 av. J.-C.
An important Old Kingdom, limestone fragment of low-relief probably a part of a
mastaba. Giza (?) c. 2600-2200 B.C. with two registers; the first featuring a female
figure standing to the right, depicted naked and adorned with wrist and ankle bracelets
and a multi-row necklace. Wearing a long braided tripartite wig leaving the ears
exposed. Its head is decorated with a cone at the top of the skull (partially eroded)
and 4 open lotus flowers. His right arm folded, the hand carried to the breast. The
lotus crown as well as the gestures suggest an allusion to the abundance and nurturing
aspect of women. The lower register features another female figure standing
to the right, a bearer of offerings. Also wearing a three-part but striped wig and
wearing a dress. His arm along the body holds an animal. These two representations
are a direct reference to the iconographic register of the tombs (mastabas) of the Old
Empire, of profusion and abundance of food to ensure the deceased their journey
in the Afterlife. The structure of the fragment suggests a false mastaba door jamb.
