Italie, probablement Gènes,
fin XVIe - début XVIIe siècle
Marbre noir (lavinia)
32 x 24 cm
SATYR FAMILY
Italy, probably Genova, late 16th - early 17th century
Black marble (lavinia)
Dim. 32 x 24 cm
This plaque carved in low relief represents a family of satyrs. On the
right, the mother, seated on a stone wall, looks with tenderness
and mischief her child holding him with her right hand. Turned
toward his mother, he holds bunches of grapes in each hand.
To the left, below behind the wall, probably the father, dressed
in panther skin. At the top right, we can see a landscape with a
church (?). On the reverse, there is a wax seal and an old ink stamp.
In the 16th century, mannerist art used part of the ancient iconography
to create pleasant and sensual decorum with a strong visual impact - the Dionysian universe and in particular the figure of the Satyr takes a central place in the ornamentation of public and private spaces such as fountains and gardens.
Our plaque is part of this trend and probably inspired by the
famous series of satyrs of the fountain of Neptune by Giambologna
(fig.1-2).
