SAINT JEAN BAPTISTE AU DESERT
ITALIE, FLORENCE, XVIIe siècle
Marbre
61 x 46 x 8,5 cm

ST JOHN THE BAPTIST IN THE WILDERNESS
ITALY, FLORENCE, 17TH CENTURY
Marble
61 x 46 x 8,5 cm
The model uses the classic iconography of Saint John the Baptist in the Desert, referring in particular to the famous painting attributed to Raphaël at the Louvre Museum, Paris, inv. 606. Saint John the Baptist is presented young with his attributes - dressed in the traditional
animal skin in reference to the gospels of Mark and Matthew “Now John was dressed in camel skin and a leather belt around the loins [...]“ and the lamb at his feet (symbol of Christ). He is seated on a marble plinth, and with his right index finger points to the Cross of Passion surrounded by a phylactery repeating the words of the ascetic “Ecce Agnus Dei“. This classic iconography will be extensively treated in painting throughout the 16th and 17th centuries in
Italy, France and Spain.
