Christ at Emmaus
Canvas
59x77 inch
Probably trained in Utrecht, then perhaps in Antwerp with Abraham Janssens, close to the group of Nordic Caravaggio painters and in particular Gerrit Van Honthorst, Matthias Stom is documented in Rome where his name appears in the register of the parish of San Nicola in Arcione , sharing accommodation with Paulus Bor. After a prolific stay in Naples where he received many commissions for churches and individuals, Stom left for Sicily, Palermo and Messina. He sends several works to Malta.
Thus, he follows the path of Caravaggio, whose brief presence in southern Italy, however, left a lasting impression.
This work was probably produced early in Stom's career, perhaps shortly after his arrival in Rome. The influence of Gerrit van Honthorst is present in the light effects on the profile and hands of the disciple on the left as well as in the figure of Christ (compared to paintings by Gerrit van Honthorst such as The Derision of Christ -Los Angeles County Museum of Art - and Jesus in the studio of Saint Joseph - carmel of Montecompatri-). The reddish treatment of the light illuminating the innkeeper's face and the construction of the hands of the disciple on the right are already by the artist.
The artist has dealt with this subject of Le Repas d'Emmaus on several occasions, in a larger format (Grenoble Museum of Painting and Sculpture).
A certificate from Professor Gianni Papi, dated June 2, 2018, will be given to the purchaser.
