Portrait of young woman in kokoshnik
Canvas
72,5x53 inch
Magnificent example of the Russian painting school of "peasant artists" who worked to order from their master. This very detailed ethnographic work from the first third of the XNUMXth century represents a young woman from the Pomorie region (shores of the White Sea, near the city of Arkhangelsk).
The woman is dressed in a traditional costume of the region which was worn for the greatest occasions (village festivals, weddings).
The artist carefully works every detail of her magnificent costume. The woman is presented in “sarafan” of rather sober colors (in most regions of Russia, women preferred
bright red colors) with many jewels in fine pearls from the northern rivers. She wears a veil of pearls under her large "kokochnik" hairstyle and "ozherelki", famous finely worked necklaces.
The set ends with a necklace of large amber beads.
During the second half of the XNUMXth century, several great artists of the classical Russian school of painting came from peasant backgrounds (Ivan Argounov, Vassili Tropinin, Mikhail Shibanov).
The aristocratic tradition of having a private artist among its peasants continued into the XNUMXth century and figured prominently in Russian art. Works representing this tradition are very rare on
the market.
We would like to thank Mrs. Ekaterina Nikolaeva-Tendil for her help in describing this lot.
