Monte-Carlo Auction House’s Modern and Contemporary Art Department has steadily built up a record of outstanding results, becoming the leading specialist in this field in Monaco by a wide margin. It has diversified its sales locations with the placing of artworks on the upper level of the more than a century old Café de Paris and in the lounges at the exceptional Yacht Club de Monaco.
Numerous auctions have achieved sales worth millions, such as the auction of a masterpiece by Henri Rousseau (“Le Douanier”) for €2.6 million, a world record, or of a small oil painting by Henri Matisse, which achieved €4.2 million.
Modern sculpture is another important speciality of the department. The unparalleled sale for €1.4 million of a bronze dancing couple by Colombian artist Fernando Botero, over which there was fierce competition, caused ripples in the market.
Close collaboration with the Paris valuation firm Beauvois has helped to increase the visibility of auctions and boost relationships with collectors in France and Northern Europe.
