This pastel represents the dancer Joséphine Chabot (born in 1864), whom Degas had met in 1883.
He remained his protector and friend throughout the 1890s.
There is another version of this portrait kept in a private collection in the United States, where the model wears the same dress and is leaning on the same sofa but in a different position.
