This necklace, a passionate quest for a lifetime, brings together the ancient coins depicting the 12 emperors of Rome. Each coin, dedicated on the obverse and reverse, thus dating the reign of each of the emperors.
The origin of the Twelve Caesars Gaius Suetonius Tranquillius (Suetonius), Roman antiquary, writer and private secretary to the Emperor Hadrian with access to the imperial archives, is mainly known today for one of the most colorful biographical works of the history: the lives of the Caesars, written between 121 and 130 AD. J.-C, commonly called: The Twelve Caesars from Julius Caesar to Domitian.
It chronicles the public careers and private lives of the men who wielded absolute power over Rome from the founding of the empire under Julius Caesar and Augustus, to the decline into depravity and civil war under Nero, and the revival that followed by his successors. A masterpiece of anecdote, ironic observation and detailed physical description that shaped our modern perception of the rise of the Roman Empire.
The number twelve is no coincidence in ancient science and Roman mythology, where it symbolizes the inner complexity of the universe.
