Since 2017, Monte-Carlo Auction House has had a special department dedicated to archaeology directed by expert Ms Bianca Massard, who also represents the Auction House in Rome, Italy.
The department concentrates on ancient civilisations with a particular focus on the provenance and authenticity of works from Egypt, Greece and Rome. It rapidly acquired an international dimension and biennial events have become top-flight affairs. The results achieved include a Roman Sea God mosaic which sold for €310,000, which was purchased by the French National Museums, exercising their right of pre-emption, for the Fine Arts and Archaeology Museum in Vienne, the sale of a small ivory horse’s head from fourth-century Greece, and, a few months ago, the last personal items belonging to the legendary collector Pierre Vérité, which fetched more than a million euros
