A Roman Gold pendant set with a Carnelian intaglio. Comic Theatrical Mask. Formed by a gold cornice decorated with braided gold threads, and set with a large intaglio on carnelian depicting a comic theatrical mask. The face is characterized by very pronounced features; the very deep wrinkles on the forehead, the marked eyebrow arches, the round bulging eyes as well as the nose are given volume by the use of globular elements. The practically bald head has wisps of messy hair on the sides, the beard under the chin with calamistrized strands accentuate the ancient and comical aspect of the theatrical character. Finally, its wide open mouth directly refers to the classic representations of ancient theater masks. The execution of the engraving presenting different techniques and volumes attest to the virtuosity of the incisor. Signs of wear. Honey color of the stone and large size. For a similar intaglio cf. AA.VV. The Beverly Collection of Gems at Alnwick Castle, p. 291, n.273. 1st Century B.C - 1st Century A.D.
